Joaquin Miller Park Karuna Community Hike

As the weather turns warmer, May’s hike will take us to the cooler climes of Oakland’s Joaquin Miller Park, the city’s “Jewel in the redwoods”.  We’ll start by hiking to Lookout Point for striking views of the bay and then reverse course and venture into the woodsy section of the park on mostly shaded trails with beautiful coast redwoods, pine, oak, bay laurel, madrone and wild blackberry.

The park takes its name from Cincinnatus Hiner (“Joaquin”) Miller who arrived in Oakland in the 1880s and purchased land in the Oakland hills.  Known as quite a colorful figure, he was a pony-express rider, lawyer, judge, teacher, gold prospector, nomad, and author. He also planted thousands of trees on his property and built stone monuments to his heroes.
