"Hot Yoga" is a term for a type of yoga that was developed by Mr. Bikram Choudhury several decades ago. It is a series of 26 specific poses – each pose done twice – in a room heated to between 98 to 106 degrees Fahrenheit.

WE DO NOT offer HOT YOGA at KARUNA – Yoga With Compassion, Pleasanton. But we do practice many of the same poses offered in a "Bikram" class.

The therapeutic benefits of yoga for orthopedic ailments are well documented. Consult with your doctor if he or she feels you would benefit from a yoga practice – and then come on in.

Make sure you connect with the instructor prior to class to let him or her know of any particular physical limitation you may be dealing with at the time of class. We have had people practice yoga with scoliosis, post-back surgeries, and a host of other physical ailments.

K Karuna answers

YES, we have props that provide support and help. Yoga can be done sitting on a chair too.

Yoga has been proven to increase flexibility and range of motion even on the "stiffest" of bodies. The important point to remember is to begin slowly and with a trained instructor that understands your limits.

A good place to start is a "Foundational" class. These classes are designed for the "ground-zero" beginner – the person with absolutely no background in fitness or yoga or any type of body work.

K Karuna answers

No, the class is not a series, so you can join us any week, and you can do drop-ins, buy class packages or enroll in unlimited monthly offers.

We offer a variety of styles:

Teachings inspired by "Iyengar" style yoga. This form of yoga is named after Mr. B.K.S. Iyenger of Pune, India – one of the world's most renowned yoga teachers. The method involves precise body alignment and posture and relies greatly on the use of props (chairs, blankets, blocks, straps, etc.) to assist the student to experience the full expression of each pose within each student's limits.

We also offer Hatha yoga, Ashtanga vinyasa, restorative yoga, meditation and mindfulness, pranayama practices and yoga therapy.

K Karuna answers

Hatha yoga is the foundation of many modern styles and is often considered the "traditional" form. Let's delve deeper into the evolution of yoga styles:

  1. Hatha Yoga: The word "Hatha" literally translates to “force”. Hatha focuses on physical postures (asanas) and breathing exercises (pranayama) to purify the body and prepare it for meditation. It's generally slow-paced and emphasizes alignment for safe and effective practice.
  2. Iyengar style Yoga: Developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, this style emphasizes precise alignment using props like blocks, straps, and chairs. It's known for its detailed instructions and focus on anatomical precision, making it suitable for both beginners and advanced practitioners. Iyengar yoga aims to improve flexibility, strength, and posture while reducing pain and promoting mental clarity.
  3. Vinyasa Yoga: A more general term for dynamic flowing yoga styles, often incorporating elements from various traditions. Vinyasa offers a structured approach and can be very meditative due to the focus on breath and movement.
  4. Ashtanga Vinyasa: This vigorous style is characterized by a set sequence of postures (series) linked through dynamic breath-synchronized movements (vinyasa). It's a physically demanding practice that builds heat and improves stamina, flexibility, and coordination.

Beyond these, there are countless styles that have emerged, each with its unique features, that we do not offer at KARUNA for now.

Bikram Yoga: Practiced in a hot room (approximately 105°F), focusing on deep stretching and detoxification.

Yin Yoga: A passive practice with long-held postures targeting connective tissues and promoting deep relaxation.

Kundalini Yoga: Combines yoga postures, breathing exercises, chanting, and meditation to awaken Kundalini energy and promote spiritual growth.

This is just a glimpse into the diverse world of yoga styles. Each one offers unique benefits and caters to different preferences. The best way to find your perfect practice is to explore and experiment!

I hope this information helps you deepen your understanding of the evolution and variety of yoga styles. Feel free to ask if you have any further questions about specific styles!
